CHAPTER 1 Mud on the face

Melissa’s POV

Finding myself with my face buried in mud was, sadly, not an uncommon occurrence. I tried to stand up, but a foot on my back shoved me back down. It was hard to breathe, and as soon as I managed to move enough to take a breath, I was pushed down once again, until they got bored and instead kicked me in the stomach, which at least allowed me to get air into my lungs. I could feel the mud all over my face, clothes and hair, and it was pissing me off. “Who do you think you are to walk before us without showing respect?” asked Fiona, one of the Alpha’s daughters, a brat. I glared at her, angry that she was so entitled that she was once again finding an excuse to pick on me, not that they really needed one. “How dare you look at us, you filthy mutt?” said her half-sister Fern, just as bad as her sister, and with more to prove, which made her even more willing to pick on me, the daughter of the former alpha. I tried to stand up again, not sure why I bothered, only to be kicked again, in the back of my knees, making me fall in the mud, again. “You’re going to get dirt in your boots if you keep that up,” said a new voice I couldn’t place. I turned to the voice and saw a tall, muscled up guy with dark hair and tan skin, looking bored and not interested on what was going on. At first, I didn’t recognize him, and that was understandable since he had been away for a while, but the bored expression and haughty manners clued me on who he was. His name was Frank, even if everyone knew him as Fang, he was the Alpha’s son and heir. Unlike all his half-siblings, he was the son of the Alpha’s True Mate, while the rest were from the collection of women he collected as a harem after his True Mate’s death. As the heir of the Pack, he had been away, visiting other packs, looking for his own True Mate, something he needed to ensure his claim to the pack and the continuity of his line. I had no idea he was back, and I wondered for a moment if he had finally found her, and then decided it didn’t matter, I wouldn’t be there long enough for that to affect me. “Someone has to teach her respect,” this time it was Fred who talked, he was the one who liked to kick me, often saying he didn’t want to get his hands dirty with me, but not caring about his boots. “She is a nobody, she should stay away from us,” his voice moved closer, and I dared a look at him, only to receive a kick to the face that left my head ringing. “She should know better by now, an omega like her, should move away and let us pass, she should avoid our eyes, she should show us. Some. f*****g. Respect!” he said, each word emphasized with a kick. “Agree,” Fang said, “I only think it’s a waste of time and energy to be the ones teaching that lesson, it’s clear she is too stupid to grasp it.” A round of laughter greeted his words, as well as another round of kicking, I wasn’t sure who was involved, but I could feel more brats had joined Fred. No matter how I wished I could get up and fight back, I couldn’t, so I endured the abuse until they left. When I got up I noticed some other members of the Pack had been watching. Some of them were laughing at me, others were looking at me with regret, but none of them really tried to help, not that I blamed them, it was just the way things were, no one dared to fight the Alpha’s brats, especially not for me, the daughter of the previous Alpha, an outcast. I got up and decided to go and visit Paul, I needed to blow off some steam, plus mom still had a few more hours of work. Both my mom and I were always assigned the worst jobs, grunt work that no one else wanted. I had just finished an eight hour shift and was bone tired, but I was so angry. It had been that way most of my life, I was always fighting the brats, but it was a pointless battle, I would always lose, since I couldn’t hurt them. Even the insults I threw at them once in a while hurt me, because it went against the Alpha’s orders, it didn’t hurt as much as trying to hit them, that would carry a pain way worse that anything I could inflict on them. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here today,” a voice called from the forest. It took me a moment to pinpoint Paul, he was very good at blending in and hiding in plain sight. “I need to free some energy,” I explained. “Another run into the brats?” he asked, stepping out to where I could see him. “You are a mess, and I guess that under all that mud I will find some bruises?” “Yeah, they didn’t like that I was walking on the sidewalk, so they pushed me to the street. I’m so tired of them.” “Don’t worry, a few more days and you will be able to leave the Pack.” Paul was my father’s Beta. After my father lost his position, he refused to follow the new Alpha, but remained with the Pack, mostly to help me and my mom. There was not much he could do to help mom, but he was a great help for me. He was the one who had trained me to fight, not that I could use that knowledge against the brats, not yet anyway. He was the one I ran with in my wolf form, since mom was forbidden to run with the Pack and I didn’t want to be there without her. “I need to get some energy out, I need some sparring,” I said. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, you are hurt and angry, you are not thinking clearly. Let’s run, go to the river and clean up a little, then, once I can see the damage, we will talk about sparring.” “Okay,” I agreed, knowing there was no point in trying to change his mind, and also, I really wanted to clean up, I was a mess, and I the mud was drying fast, making it even worse.  I knew that changing into my wolf would make the run easier, but if I wanted to clean up, it would be better to do it with my clothes on, once I was clean, I would be able to change easier. Running, in any way, always helped me clear my mind.  Mostly because while running I couldn’t be distracted, not at the speed I was going.  I had to check around me for predators of any kind, I had to see where I was putting my feet, I needed to see the branches and roots to make sure I wouldn’t hit or stumble with one of those.  I also had to focus on myself, my body and its place in the world.  Not to mention I had to make sure not to hurt me even more, the brat’s attack had left me more injured that I wanted to acknowledge.  By the time we got to the river I was feeling better, and tired.  I went right into the cold water and washed the mud from my clothes, skin and hair.  I even took my clothes off to wash them better, and left them on a rock to dry. “That’s a nasty bruise, you could have internal bleeding,” Paul said.  “Did they gang up on you again?” “Yeah, it seems that the heir is back, so most of the brats were together.” “Fang is back?  Did he finally find his mate?” “No idea, he was alone, plus I don’t care.” “You should shift a couple of times, that should take care of most of your injuries.  Then, we will see just how tired you are before deciding if we should be doing something else.  It doesn’t look good,” he frowned, looking at me. It didn’t bother me that he was looking at my naked body, as shifters we were mostly comfortable in our skin, most wolves shifted from human to wolf at least once a day, and that involved certain levels of nudity, since we had to take our clothes off before shifting.  The only one that we didn’t like being naked around, was the Alpha, Hunter.  He was always leering at the females, looking for his next conquest.  We were lucky that the rules forbid him from taking mated females, so most were safe, it was the unmated females that were at risk.  Just another reason for me to get far away as soon as I turned eighteen. I shifted into my wolf, a process that was slower because of my wounds.  Shifting involved changing our bodies; muscles were torn, bones reformed, organs moved around.  On the upside, changing usually took care of most wounds, for the rebuild closed cuts and fixed broken bones and bruised organs.  It didn’t help with illnesses, but we could bounce back from accidents fairly easily.  The downside?  It took a lot of energy, and with extensive damage one shift wasn’t enough to fix everything.  After shifting a couple of times, I was exhausted, but feeling better.  Paul had been right, I didn’t have the energy to fight anymore.   “How are you feeling, pup?” he asked, and I could tell he was trying to provoke me, but I was too tired to care about some stupid pet name. “Tired, if that’s okay, I will go back to the house and wait for mom, she should be about to get out of work.” “That sounds like a good idea.  Stop for a moment at my house, I have some rabbits that you could use for dinner.”   I felt happy for the first time in a long time.  It was just a matter of days, soon we would be free, and I would be able to start living my life, out of the shadow of Hunter.

CHAPTER 2 Back Home

Fang’s POV

It was good to be back. In the last couple of years I had only been able to visit the Pack for a few days at a time, quick visits while I was passing through, just long enough to enjoy a family dinner and maybe have one of the local bitches warm my bed. But it was time to visit home and stay for a while.  Since I had already been to all the neighboring packs and haven’t found my True Mate, father had asked me to come back. We needed to have a chat, it was time to decide if I was going to do the same circuit visiting the same packs again, or if I was going to venture further away. Personally, I wanted to stay closer and keep moving with the other heirs that were looking for their mate. At the end, it would be my father’s decision, as long as he remained my Alpha, I needed to follow his orders. Not being able to find my mate was starting to affect me, but the upside was I got to travel to different packs and meet people, also find allies for the future when I became the Alpha. At first, it had been hard being away, I felt out of place and there were some subtle differences between our packs that were both hard to identify and to follow. I wasn’t the only wolf that visited other packs looking for a mate, so I became part of a group that traveled from pack to pack.  We were a brotherhood, and they were the allies I would be able to count with in the future.  They had received me in their packs, and now it was my turn to host, so I had returned here earlier, to set everything up for their visit. “Fang! Welcome. How are you?” my father greeted me happily. “I’m good, glad to be home,” I answered, taking a seat in from of my father’s desk. His office was the same as always, cluttered and full of trophies. It was so different from the offices of other Alphas, and I wondered what my friends would think of it. “Is everything fine? I had the omegas clean your room, it should have everything you need. Have you seen your siblings? They were eager to have you back, they all look up to you, you know, and they miss you.” “Yeah, my room is perfect, and I saw my siblings earlier, they were waiting for me as soon as I arrived, we took a walk around the Pack lands and they showed me all the changes,” not that there were many, everything looked the same, some places looked older, and that was about it. The only differences were in the Pack House, and the garage, but other than that, it was like stepping back I time. “It was good to see them again, they have grown up so much.” “You need to be careful with them,” he said with a sly smile, “they are growing stronger and you need to protect your position as my heir. Make sure to find your mate soon and solidify your position.” I heard him, but I also knew he was just trying to cause trouble between me and my brothers. None of them was strong enough to challenge me. As the son of a True Mated couple, I had many advantages over my half-siblings, not to mention my father had trained me since I was young, while he spoiled my brothers instead. I used to resent him for that, but once I got out and visited other packs, I was glad for it. All alphas were competitive, and if it wasn’t for my extensive training, I would have been at a disadvantage against others. “I’m doing my best, but you know that’s not something that can be forced,” you could mate someone and form a bond, but the bond with your True Mate was magical. Something that couldn’t be forced, that had to be given and accepted. It was especial, the reason why so many spent years looking for their True Mates, the reason I had been traveling for two years. My father had suggested a couple of times for me to take a mate, just until my True Mate arrived, but I was sure he didn’t mean it, after all, he hadn’t mated with anyone after my mother’s death. “I know, I know. It’s just that you have been away for a long time, and I want you here. I feel like our neighbors are planning to attack, I need all my strongest cards around to keep us safe.” “I haven’t heard anything about that,” I said, thinking back to all the rumors I had heard during my travels. “Everyone is out to get us, it’s the nature of the predator. We need to be ready, and sometimes, it helps to be the first to strike. I really hope you find your True Mate, but don’t take too long, you can never know when the enemy will make his move.” “I’m sure we will be safe, but I assure you, I’m as eager as you to find her and come back here. The others will start arriving in a week, and all of them will be here the day before the full moon for the ceremony. I need to make sure we have enough space for them.” “Of course, go ahead. Make sure to show them the might of our Pack, make some allies for the future, but remember to be careful, don’t show any weaknesses.” “Don’t worry dad, I know how to handle them, I’ve been traveling with most of them for a while now.” I left his office feeling a little out of place. I came into the kitchen and one of the omegas immediately had a tray with beverages ready for me to pick. I knew that whatever I wanted, I would get. I had always prided myself in knowing that my Pack was better trained than most. Father always said that you could tell how strong a Pack was, depending on how well their people knew their places. That was one of the problems with Melissa, she was a weak link, a b***h that didn’t know her place in the Pack’s hierarchy. I hoped that the rest of the alphas would be impressed with my Pack. I wanted to make sure everything was ready for them, that they would see how amazing my Pack was. I didn’t have much hope they would find their mates here, I had come back not because I believed I would find my True Mate in my own Pack, but because I knew that I had to come back and touch base with my father.  As alphas, we needed strong wolves to stand by our sides, and most of the females in the Pack were weak. Well, Fiona was an exception as the daughter of the Alpha, as most of our sisters, but she was seventeen, and wouldn’t be eligible to look for her mate for a few more months.   My mind went back to my True Mate, thinking of how she would be.  My dad always said that a True Mate was your perfect complement, she was supposed to be your perfect fan, your biggest supporter, your dream come true.  I knew that my mother’s death had left him broken, he had never been able to forget her, but never stopped looking for someone to take her place.  I couldn’t blame him either, as the Alpha he had women throwing themselves at him, most doing their best to give him a pup so they could secure a place by his side.  Other alphas wanted something different, and that was something I didn’t understand.  Most of them wanted challenges, as if we didn’t have enough of those.  All I knew is that whatever magic gave us our True Mates, was strong and wise enough to give us exactly what we needed.

CHAPTER 3 My mother, my only friend

Melissa’s POV

I had already finished the tasks I had been assigned for the day, grunt work, the kind no one else wanted to do. I had managed to stay away from the brats all day, it wasn’t that I was afraid of them, but I knew that they would take any chance to beat me down, and I had things to do. I was worried about my mom, she looked worse every day, and no matter how much I insisted that she should quit the Pack and go away, she refused to leave me alone. I couldn’t wait for my eighteen birthday, the day my mom and I would finally be able to leave the Pack and go search for a better place. I could feel we were running out of time, because no matter how hard life was for me, it was even worse for my mother. I knew that in a way she was the only one standing between me and Hunter, and that there was no telling what he could do to me if I was forced to move into the Pack House. Stupid pack rules stated that I belonged to the Pack, and if my mom left, I had to stay behind, but as an orphan, I would have to move to the Pack House, and would have to face Hunter, his w****s and the brats every single day. I didn’t really care about it, at this point it would be only for a few days, but mom refused to leave me behind, and I felt like she was afraid for more, but she wasn’t talking about it. Mom had been the Alpha female before Hunter took over, strong in her own right and a leader for our people. I didn’t know much about my father, it was forbidden to talk about him, and even my mother had to follow the new Alpha’s orders. That was the worst part, the control he had over all of us. If he made an order, an Alpha order, we weren’t able to break it. He wasn’t much of an Alpha, at least that’s what Paul and mom said, but he was really strong in his compulsions, and no one could disobey him. They said that most Alphas didn’t use that power as often as Hunter did, and because of that, he was very strong at it. As they explained to me, that didn’t make him a better Alpha, that power only worked for members of your pack, and a good Alpha didn’t need to force others to obey you, a good Alpha made people follow him out of their own free will. My mother was one of the most affected by the Alpha’s power. Being able to shift helped with our wounds, but also with our overall health and endurance, and she was unable to shift because of Hunter’s orders. After my father lost the Alpha Challenge, my mother refused to mate the new Alpha, still hurt over losing her True Mate, and had been punished for it by not being allowed to shift. She was growing weaker and weaker, the only way she could shift again was by accepting to mate Hunter, breaking her bond to the Pack, but she refused to leave without me. She also kept me away from most of the Pack, I think in a way she was trying to keep me invisible, so Hunter didn’t remember that my father had a daughter. Mom couldn’t completely escape him, but she could keep me away. It was bad enough that I had been ordered not to fight back, but not being able to shift was a whole different level of torture. Something we needed to fix soon. I arrived at home and called for my mother, but she didn’t respond. I thought she was still working and decided to start preparing a good meal using the meat Paul had given me the day before. I started by checking we had everything we needed and gathering all ingredients. Before starting to cook, I decided I had time for a quick shower, I didn’t feel comfortable in the kitchen without cleaning up. I went to the bathroom and found my mother on the floor. For a moment, I couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing, but then I ran to her and tried to wake her up, knowing perfectly well that she wouldn’t be opening her eyes ever again. She was already cold and I couldn’t hear her heart beat. I took her into my arms, pleading for her to wake up. It wasn’t until my home was invaded by pack members that I noticed I had been screaming. It didn’t take them long to realize what had happened. I could feel them moving around, but they left me alone for a while, not knowing what to do, waiting until someone with higher authority could arrive and take over. “What’s going on?” Hunter, the Alpha asked. “Take her away, check on Cassandra,” he ordered. It took a couple of them to drag me away from my mother’s body, she was my everything, I couldn’t let her go, I needed her and they were keeping me away from her. One they took her from me, Hunter moved next to my mother, and I saw red. It was his fault, he was the reason I had lost my mother. My screams turned into a growl, and I tried to go after the Alpha, he barely noticed me, as he kneeled next to my mother and lifted her in his arms, holding her as if she was precious to him, as if he wasn’t his fault she had suffered, that she had died. I kept fighting, and he finally turned to me, as he started moving to the exit. “Shut up and calm down,” he said in his Alpha voice, and I went numb. I stopped fighting and my growls went out. I still tried to go after him, he was taking my mother away from me. I couldn’t let her alone with him, whom she had hated with everything in her, him who had condemned her to death. He looked over his shoulder and saw that I was still trying to move. “Stay here.” I just stared in shock as he took my mother away and left my house. Taking my everything with him. I tried to fight his orders, I really did, but the pain of trying to deny his power left me twitching in pain until it overcame me and made me pass out.
